SMPlayer Launches 17.1 With Chromecast Support

SMPlayer, the popular free and open source media player releases version 17.1 with Chromecast support. With this experimental feature you can now directly send videos from your local PC, streaming videos, YouTube/Vimeo etc videos directly to Chromecast device.

SMPlayer already supports YouTube and other tube sites including playlist playing. With inclusion of Chromecast support it is indeed became one of the best open source media player.

Some other notable features that included in this release are GUI can be changed with a “Tablet Mode” option which is great for users who prefers watching videos in Tablets.

Now it is possible to send playing video to another display screen when two screen is connected to a computer. There is a new menu option – “Send Video to Screen” which enables this amazing feature.

Other improvements:

  • Support for high DPI screen where SMPlayer GUI scales itself to proper zoom instead of looking tiny.
  • Global Shortcuts enables media keys functionality when SMPlayer was playing in the background.
  • Settings are remembered for online streams means you can now resume playback of YouTube videos from where you left

To do fresh install of SMPlayer in Ubuntu 16.x via PPA, run below commands from terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install smplayer smtube smplayer-themes smplayer-skins

For qt4 version, replace smplayer with smplayer-qt4 in above commands.

To upgrade an existing SMPlayer installation in Ubuntu run below commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install smplayer smtube smplayer-themes smplayer-skins

To install in Fedora 23, run below commands from terminal.

sudo dnf config-manager --add-repo http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/smplayerdev/Fedora_23/home:smplayerdev.repo
sudo dnf install smplayer
