How to Install LibreOffice 5.4 in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Here’s how you can install LibreOffice 5.4 * in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

The free and open source office suite, LibreOffice recently released version 5.4.2 with numerous improvements and bug fixes. Long term release Ubuntu 16.04 comes with older version of LibreOffice 5.1 which is stable but lack new functionalities and improvements.

If you want to get a feel of the latest LibreOffice 5.4* series and want to remove the pre-installed version of LibreOffice in Ubuntu 16.04, follow below steps:

[Note: It is completely okay to continue using older version of stable LibreOffice that comes pre-loaded with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. However, these steps are for those, who wants to use the latest features while staying in stable Ubuntu 16.04 LTS distribution]

Open terminal and run below commands to remove the installed LibreOffice:

sudo apt remove –purge libreoffice*
sudo apt autoclean
sudo apt autoremove

Do a reboot, to make sure everything is okay (though you could skip this step).

After reboot, open terminal again and add below PPA

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-5-4

And finally run below commands to install the latest LibreOffice 5.4 series from this official PPA.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install libreoffice

Once installed, you can launch LibreOffice via Dash search.
