Linux Mint 20.1 – Desktop

Honestly, not so much major changes in this Linux Mint 20.1 point release. Point releases mean bug fixes, version updates for required applications, and minor enhancements under the hood that are needed to maintain stability.

Having said that, here are the major ones.

Linux Mint 20.1 “Ulyssa” – Top Features

Core Updates

Linux Mint 20.1 is based on Ubuntu 20.04.1 which is the current stable release of Ubuntu 20.04.

It is based on Linux Kernel 5.4 (last LTS Kernel). Although a new Linux Kernel 5.10 (LTS) is released a while back.

The flagship desktop environment Cinnamon desktop sees a major version upgrade. In this release, the Cinnamon desktop is upgraded from version 4.6 to 4.8.3.

Cinnamon 4.8.x brings improved fractional scaling support for HiDPI screens, better integration with Flatpak apps, added support for “suspend-then-hibernate” mode.

It also added the option to add any file as favorite which you can access from the favorite menu in the Nemo file manager.

Add to Favorites – Linux Mint 20.1

Web App Manager

Web Apps – Linux Mint 20.1

A new app Web App Manager is included in Linux Mint 20.1. You can configure your favorite websites as Apps and they can run in their own window.

The Xfce 4.14 and MATE desktop 1.24 variant remained almost the same. The Xfce 4.16 is not yet released, hopefully will be included in the future in the next point release.

Hypnotix

Hypnotix IPTV Player – Linux Mint 20.1

Probably the main attraction of this point release is Hypnotix – a new IPTV player from Linux Mint. Based on the user’s feedback, Linux Mint developed an IPTV player. Hypnotix is capable of playing IPTV streams, playlists from the various free contents available. Once you install, you can browse the free content playlists which are loaded by the Linux Mint team.

Hypnotix comes with a caching feature embedded for intermittent network connections.
