Google Earth in Ubuntu 16.04

Google Earth – the popular virtual globe/map is used by millions of users. The Linux version of this package depends on Linux Standard Base a.k.a lsb-core package. However lsb-core became obsolete in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. So here is how you install lsb-core in Xenial Xerus and make the Google Earth work.

Install lsb-core in Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus

To install lsb-core, run below commands from terminal.

wget http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/lsb/lsb-security_4.1+Debian13+nmu1_amd64.deb
wget http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/lsb/lsb-core_4.1+Debian13+nmu1_amd64.deb
wget http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/lsb/lsb-invalid-mta_4.1+Debian13+nmu1_all.deb
sudo apt install lsb-*.deb

If you get dependency error, make sure to run below.

sudo apt -f install

Download and Install Google Earth

Run below commands from terminal.

wget https://dl.google.com/dl/earth/client/current/google-earth-stable_current_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i google-earth-stable_current_amd64

Once installed, you can find the Google Earth in Application menu / search in Dash.

Enjoy earth view!
